The Little Drummer Boy

The Little Drummer Boy

Of the many Christmas songs available to us, this year the song "Little Drummer Boy" has seemed to work its way into my thoughts and heart the most.

When most people listen to this song, I've heard many reactions, or impressions of it, most along the lines of, "Of all the Christmas songs, this is one I really don't like all that much."

I can fully understand that feeling. I felt that way for quite some time.  I learned this song as a solo way back in High School while taking voice lessons. And the "Rum-pum-pum-pum" was extremely annoying.  It seemed incessant.

But this year, for some reason, the song has hit my emotions more than any other year.  Up there in the top songs that touch my heart.

Since it did, I decided to try to understand why.

So, in thinking about it, I discovered that within this song is an answer to "How then shall we live?"

Think of the song as a metaphor.

We are the drummer boy.  The drum, represents our life.

As the drummer boy, we have nothing to bring to the King.  Except our life.  And we can 'play' our life ... that is live our life for the King - and do it the best we can.

Merry Christmas to all!
