Under the weather...

Sorry folks, I seem to have caught some sort of creeping crud and feel like I'm down for the count.

Strangely, I haven't had much congestion - just a sore throat and the "drips" (where they are coming from I do not know!?)

Hopefully I'll be back up and running early in the week.

Thanks for your patience.

To re-cap...

Ok, I'm back.  To recap, when we last saw our intrepid writer, he was laid low by some sort of respiratory infection.

I won't call it a cold, really, but it had every thing that a cold does, except for the stuffed up head.  Until the end.  Then I hit it with some NiteTime medicine for a couple days and it died.

Well, mostly dead, anyway (and I hope it gets all the way dead, unlike Wesley)

As for the what else has been happening around here ...

GridEx II cause us (read ME at the behest of Beautiful) to mount the new distribution box, setup the transfer switch/breakers, wire the feed for the generator side of the box, and get the plug on the outside of the house wired up properly.  Now we simply have to figure out when to turn the well off for a few hours as I move the well pump, septic pump, and a few outlets from the mains box to the transfer box, so that they will run from the genset when the power is out.

Yeah, I did this while I was recouperating.  One day I thought I was going to cough up a lung.  I'm glad I didn't.

Ah well - that's just about done.  The next project is to finish all the railings and lighting on the new decking before the family arrives for Thanksgiving.

Of course, if past events predict future ones, the transfer switch might get tested sooner than I hoped.

Personally, I would put whatever I could into physical metals these days.  If I had anything to spare, which I don't, I'd be buying silver and gold.  Mostly silver, though.  Had 4 one ounce rounds in my cart today, but just couldn't convince myself to pull the trigger and buy them.  I figure it would be a hedge against the coming idiocy of a collapse, and a "Safety net" if the job thing doesn't happen soon enough.  But... first and foremost is to put food on the table, and keep the lights on.

Ah well.  The Lord will provide for that which I wasn't able to.  I just hope He allows us time to be a bit more prepped.

We, The People...

In my reading this morning, I am reading through 2 Chronicles, and am at Chapter 34.  The young king (Josiah was 8 when he began to reign), is given a book that was found in the temple.  Of course, he's about 26 when the incident happens - after he has destroyed the high places - the idol alters and begun to turn the nation back to God.

My guess, and that's really all it is since it doesn't say, is that they found the book of Deuteronomy, where the children of Israel enter into the convenant with God and He tells them, not only of the blessings in store for those that keep his commands, but the curses, the punishment, that is in store for those that depart from His commands.

Josiah, hearing this, tears his clothes, and weeps.  He knows the Lord is angry with the nation, because of their departure from the relationship they had with the Living God!

So, he sends to enquire of a prophet (in this case a prophetess), and in verses 23-25 she tells the king the unvarnished truth of what is to come.  Yet, God, being merciful, has a note for Josiah - beginning in verse 27,

Because thine heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before God, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst thyself before me, and didst rend thy clothes, and weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith the LORD (28) Behold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, neither shall thine eyes see all the evil that I will bring upon this place, and upon the inhabitants of the same. So they brought the king word again.

Now, to the point of this post...

I was thinking as I read this, would that we had a president and leaders that would read the "Book" and realize that we are on the wrong path and rend their clothes and turn this nation back... but even as this thought formed in my mind, the answer came ...

We, the People ...

From the declaration, it says:

Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed

We, the People ...

We are the "powers that be".  We the People have the hardend hearts.  We are the ones that must read the book, rend our clothes and then change the direction of this once great land that was governed with Godly principles.

Will "We the People" discover the error of our ways in time?

Will "We the People" rend our clothes and have a tender heart to humble ourselves before God?

Will "We the People", those of us that are indeed called by God rid ourselves of our idols and turn from our wicked ways and seek His face so that He can heal our land?

Sadly, I fear that the state of the church in this country is such that "We the People" don't even know how bad, how evil it has become simply because we have placed the idols of materialism, greed, unnatural love, lust, and others, on the throne of our hearts.

On a bit of a serious note...

Beautiful found this and posted it earlier to her faceplace.

I thought it noteworthy and quite to the point.

He was getting old and paunchy
And his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the Legion,
Telling stories of the past.

Of a war that he once fought in
And the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his buddies;
They were heroes, every one.

And 'tho sometimes to his neighbors
His tales became a joke,
All his buddies listened quietly
For they knew where of he spoke.

But we'll hear his tales no longer,
For ol' Joe has passed away,
And the world's a little poorer
For a Veteran died today.

He won't be mourned by many,
Just his children and his wife.
For he lived an ordinary,
Very quiet sort of life.

He held a job and raised a family,
Going quietly on his way;
And the world won't note his passing,
'Tho a Veteran died today.

When politicians leave this earth,
Their bodies lie in state,
While thousands note their passing,
And proclaim that they were great.

Papers tell of their life stories
From the time that they were young,
But the passing of a Veteran
Goes unnoticed, and unsung.

Is the greatest contribution
To the welfare of our land,
Some jerk who breaks his promise
And cons his fellow man?

Or the ordinary fellow
Who in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his country
And offers up his life?

The politician's stipend
And the style in which he lives,
Are often disproportionate,
To the service that he gives.

While the ordinary Veteran,
Who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal
And perhaps a pension, small.

It is not the politicians
With their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom
That our country now enjoys.

Should you find yourself in danger,
With your enemies at hand,
Would you really want some cop-out,
With his ever-waffling stand?

Or would you want a Veteran
His home, his country, his kin,
Just a common Veteran,
Who would fight until the end.

He was just a common Veteran,
And his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us
We may need his likes again.

For when countries are in conflict,
We find the Veteran's part,
Is to clean up all the troubles
That the politicians start.

If we cannot do him honor
While he's here to hear the praise,
Then at least let's give him homage
At the ending of his days.

Perhaps just a simple headline
In the paper that might say:

Your mission, should you choose to accept it...

Thankfully, because there was a rumored grocery workers strike coming, we had stocked up on a lot of things that we were low on, and have plenty of stock should things get rough - what with me laid off and all.

In the meantime, we've decided that we're going to simply replenish those items that we use each week, an dpick up a few additional things.  Like we should have been doing, and got a bit lax on.  Life, happens at a blinding pace. Especially with teenagers (insert Sebastion voice from Little Mermaid).  We could be farther ahead than we are.

I blame myself for this mostly.  As Head of the Family, and leader of the house, it is part of my job to set the tone and the pace of prepping.  Because of a number of things, I was beginning to get overwhelmed and letting it slip.

Well, the Lord got ahold of me, and let me know, in no uncertain terms, that if I was going to be His leader in this home, I'd better be walking in His will.

This sent me on a journey to find out what His will is - and I will tell you, His will for me isn't necessarily His will for you.  Or rather, the mission he has for me, probably isn't the mission He has for you!

My mission pertains to my life, family, calling, and current level of education, and where my walk with Jesus is.

So my mission - at least at first - was to find out what the greater mission was that He had in mind for me.  Was it what I wanted it to be? Was it something that I was already prepared for? And was it going to begin immediately?

Well, the answer to all of those and more was "Yes!"  - sort of.

I believe I know what part of the "long-term" mission is, but what I am certain of is what the current mission is.  Training.  As a soldier, we cannot go into battle without training.  So I am taking some course work in Biblical studies.  Why? Well first, because He wants me to.  But I believe that in the longer term, He wants me to for a number of reasons - some of which are, to be better able to teach my family and others - to be a witness to others of His love.  Also, because I believe there is a larger calling for me in the future.  Will I preach? Will I teach? will I do mission work? I don't know.  I do know that He has put raising up Godly men on my heart - which leads to Godly families.

Ok, how does all this relate to prepping, you ask?

Well, In the course of my journey of discovery, He led me to a few things.  Things that need to get put in order - that I need to prepare, and prepare for.

  • Mind/Spirit
  • Home
  • Body/Health
  • Family

These things can apply to anyone of us as preppers.  In my case the Mind and Spirit part has to do with the courses I'm taking (and a few other things, but the courses are first priority), Home is a large part of being able to eventually relocate to somewhere in The American Redoubt - if He so leads us.  Body/Health for me and mine has to do with getting this body back into something other than the shape of round. And finally, family has to do with getting the entire family into the midset, and the mode of prepping for what may come.  This includes putting food back, supplies, gardening, etc...

As you can see, all of these can be applied to everyone of us.

So, where am I going to take this from here?

Stay tuned to find out.

Well ... that was special...

Sorry for the delay on posting.

One of the reasons I've been delayed is because shortly after the last post, I received notice from my employer (who had laid me off because the budget didn't include a senior level developer), that my position was not going to be renewed.  Therefore the layoff is permanent.

Of course I've been looking.  It is not very smart to be off work and not looking.  Yet, I still haven't found a new opportunity.

But, in the meantime, this also means that the scramble for health insurance and dental and vision is going to begin.  Do we go with COBRA? or the nightmare that is obamacare? or is there something else out there in the world that can be tapped into?

Turns out there is something - at least for Christians that are serious about their faith.  That is Samaritan Ministries,  They aren't insurance, but a cost - sharing plan between christians.

Still, we have to find our own dental and vision.  Vision isn't so difficult - but dental!  Sheesh! Waiting periods for fillings, or what-ever?  I think I'm going to see if the COBRA will allow me to split the dental and vision off and only pick those up.

The next article will defenitly have a prepping twist to it, guaranteed!  I plan to begin doing a few articles that will deal with Prepping, God's provision, and planning.  In there will also be my own opinion of what we're looking at over the next few months/years (in general, not me specifically).

So hang on to your hats! It's going to pick up, and it might be a bumpy ride!
